How to Build – Electric Mainboard no.1

Kit components

  • Wooden parts
  • Electric mini motor
  • Toggle switch
  • Battery socket
  • 12 x steel balls – 10mm diameter
  • 2 x M1.6 screws – 5mm length
  • 2 x M3 screws – 10mm length
  • 2 x nuts and spacers
  • 5 x bolts – 6mm length
  • Rubber band
  • Sandpaper

What you need to prepare

  • Knife or scalpel
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Wood glue
  • Battery 1,5V
Before you start assembly you should watch video below. 


Now, all you need is accuracy and patience. Let’s start.

1. Prepare wooden parts

2. Cutting

Carefully cut the small retaining tabs holding the parts in the panels and use sandpaper to smooth out edges.

3. Base and legs

The base consists of three pieces: bottom, middle and smallest top. Glue middle and bottom layers together, shown on the images. Optional: glue legs on the underside of the base.

Wait until the glue dries.

4. Pillars

Glue the two small pillars exactly in the engraved circles. If you have any of the shields put one of them on the pillars and make sure that everything matches.

Gluing accuracy is very important.

5. Switch base

Glue the four small parts and create “cube” base for switch.

6. Motor frame

Place the frames into the slots on the base panel. Make sure that the frame forms a right angle (90 degrees) with the base.

7. Gear wheel

Place the four small bits through the all three parts of the wheel. Use sandpaper to fit bits into the holes. Glue all together. You could use 10mm screw as an axle to align all parts of the wheel.

All parts must be centered very accurately.

8. Frame gear

Prepare two 10 mm screws, nuts and spacers. Tighten the screws as shown on the pictures. The screws will serve as the axis of the gear wheel. Place the frames in to the gear wheel. Remember about the spacers. The front frame should be on the left side of the gear. Use pliers to firmly tighten the nuts.

The screws should be tightened very firmly.

9. Gear installation

Place the frame with the gear into the slots on the base panel. Make sure that the frame forms a right angle (90 degrees) with the base.

Gluing accuracy is very important. Wait until the glue dries.

10. Strut

Glue the strut and use rubber band until the glue dries.

11. Small gear

Place two small gears on the motor axle and glue them together. Wait until the glue dries, remove the gears from the axle and glue to them, the smallest gear.

12. Switch installation

Screw the switch to the cover, pull the wires through the hole in the base and glue the cover with switch to the “cube” base.

13. Motor installation

Pull the wires through the hole in the base and screw the motor to the frame (use 5mm screw M1.6).

14. Battery socket installation

Pull the wires through the hole in the base and screw the socket to the base (use 6mm bolt).

15. Connecting the wires

Connect battery socket wires with the switch and motor. Other motor wire should be connected directly to the switch. Insert the 1,5V battery into the socket, turn on the switch and check that the motor rotates counterclockwise. If the motor rotates in a clockwise direction, connect vice versa the motor wires.

16. Final preparations

Use four 6mm bolts and screw firmly the mainboard “heart” to the base (place the wires under the base). Put the small wheel on the motor axle.

Congratulations. Mainboard is ready to go.
